Suncoat

Suncoat is best known for its expertise in water-based nail polish technology, and they offer a complete line of water-based nail polish products as well as natural organic colour cosmetics.

The wonderful Suncoat range includes vegan products, and all their products avoid harsh toxins. Liu Yingchun of Suncoat tells us her story:

"Back in 2001, when my then seven-year old little girl first showed interest in nail polish, I took a long, hard look at the ingredients in conventional nail polish, and was horrified to find toxic chemicals such as toluene, formaldehyde releasing ingredients, acetates, phthalate, alcohol etc. As a chemist, I knew how much potential damage these toxic chemicals could do to my innocent little girl.

So I went out to retail stores, searching for a water-based, non-toxic nail polish for my daughter. Much to my surprise, however, I failed to find anything at all. There was virtually no water-based nail polish on the market.

Suncoat

I had no choice but to develop a water-based nail polish myself. At that point, I began dreaming of introducing a line of non-toxic, environmentally friendly nail polish products to the market for other women and young girls to enjoy.

Although I have worked as a research chemist for many years, only after I started working on water-based nail polish did I realise how difficult it was to formulate a quick drying, long-lasting water-base nail polish. The current formulation for manufacturing Suncoat water-based nail polish is the result of numerous long days in the lab, and many sleepless nights in the office."

Water-based nail polish has been a long held dream for cosmetic scientists - there has not been a quality waterbased nail polish on the market until 5 years ago when Suncoat launched it’s nail polish line. Many of the major cosmetic companies have attempted to develop waterbased nail polishes, but the technical difficulties have prevented them from being successful. Namely, overcoming the lack of adhesion (to human nails) and slow drying time. The toluene and formaldehyde-free chemical nail polish sold in shops is still not comparable to water-based nail polish, these nail polishes still give off chemical fumes, pollute the air, have an offensive odour, and are highly flammable and explosive. They can also harm nails, making them dry, yellow, brittle and weak.

In Suncoat water-based nail polish, however, the chemical solvents (toluene and acetates etc) are replaced by water. When applied, water vapor is released in to the air, not chemical fumes. This nail polish does not dry or discolour nails, it is practically odour free, it is not flammable and it is environmentally friendly. Earth pigments and carmine are used for colours, making them suitable for vegans. Next on Suncoat’s list was the Natural Nail Polish remover. This earth friendly product is naturally derived from farm crops and does not contain any petroleum ingredients, it is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic, and also readily biodegradable.

Suncoat Natural Nail Polish Remover works for both waterbased nail polish and conventional nail polish and is an excellent replacement for traditional chemical nail polish remover.

In 2005 Suncoat expanded their repertoire from natural colour cosmetics to hair care with the launch of a sugarbased natural hair styling spray, and the addition of sugarbased natural hair styling gel, hair styling mousse and a new hair styling spray in 2008.

These hair styling products provide volume, long lasting hold and add shine without using any chemicals. They are also alcohol-free which prevents hair from drying out, and again are suitable for vegans.

Finally, a quick look at their natural mascara - made with natural sugar-based biopolymer, kaolin clay, earth pigments and enriched with vitamin E, it naturally builds lash volume and length. A superior alternative for your sensitive eyes and our environment! Although NOT waterproof, this does mean it is easier to wash off at the end of the day. It is not tested on animals.
